News-Herald columnist and author Marlene Womack will be signing copies of her new book "Moonshine Mayham". Womack brings the moonshine whiskey business alive again after its demise several decades ago. Read about the manufacture of illegal liquor, the trials and tribulations of the moonshiners and the agents trying to apprehend them. Several incidents and raids occurred right here in Apalachicola, Franklin County and Gulf County. The book also includes information on Temperance and the women's movement, patent medicines, rumrunners, Bind Tigers, recipes, NASCAR, a murder at the Cape San Blas Lighthouse, and the remembrances of several individuals.

MBARA Kingfish Tournament adds Prickly Pears "Trash King" Category Saturday August 23rd Prickly Pears is sponsoring a new category for this years MBARA Kingfish Tournament, the "Trash King" category. We all know that trash is a problem on our beaches and in the gulf. So this year you can win a great prize for just bringing in your trash and picking up that floating trash that you find. Here's how it works: TRASH KING PRIZES: 1. $100 - Most weight ($50 cash and $50 gift certificate to Prickly Pears) 2. $50 - Most unusual single piece of trash ($25 cash and $25 gift certificate to Prickly Pears) RULES: 1. You must a registered competitor in the MBARA Kingfish Tournament. 2. Bring your bagged trash to Prickly Pears between 1:00 and 5:30 p.m. central time to be weighed. 3. MBARA Kingfish Tournament registration form must be presented to the "Trash Master" to be eligible to win - no exceptions 4. All trash must truly be trash - NO STINKY STUFF (no bait, chum, or any fish parts) no tree limbs, or any other organic matter. The goal is to clean up the gulf! All that other stuff is natural. 5. This year, we?re pleased to announce that our special guests will be mystery author, Alafair Burke, and Chuck Sambuchino, editor of Guide to Literary Agents. They will join our accomplished faculty for another wonderful year of inspiration and education. Past presenters include, Jim Pascoe, Jim Huang, Margaret Coel, Benjamin M. LeRoy, editor of Bleak House Books; judge and novelist Terry Lewis; poet, novelist and writing professor, Lynn Wallace; literary agents, Mark Ryan and Cricket Pechstein; fiction writer and English professor, Douglas Wells; fiction writer and newspaper columnist, Tony Simmons; novelist, River Jordan; novelist and reporter, S. V. Date; novelist, columnist, and screenwriter, Michael Lister. In addition to covering the elements of craft, we will be hosting the September meeting of the Florida Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America and host the Horror Writers Association.
